Introduction
This Privacy Policy ("Policy") explains the information practices of EML & MSG Viewer ("we," "us," and "our") with respect to your use of our browser extension and any related services ("Services") we provide.
The short version: EML & MSG Viewer opens email files (.eml, .msg and winmail.dat) on your own computer and shows them in Chrome's side panel. Everything happens locally in your browser. We do not run a server, we do not have an account system, and we never receive your emails, their attachments or anything inside them.
Before you use the Services, please review this Policy. By using any part of the Services, you understand that your information will be handled as outlined here. If you do not agree, please do not use our Services.
Our Principles
EML & MSG Viewer has designed this policy to be consistent with the following principles:
- Privacy policies should be human readable and easy to find.
- Emails are personal and often confidential, so their contents should never leave your device unless you deliberately send them somewhere yourself.
- Data practices should meet the reasonable expectations of users.
How Your Email Files Are Handled
When you open an email file — by dragging it into the side panel or choosing it with the file picker — the extension reads that file using your browser's built-in file API and parses it inside the extension itself. The message exists only in the memory of the open panel. The extension has no permission to access websites and makes no network requests with your data.
The extension never modifies your original file. When you close the panel or the browser, the loaded messages are gone. Reopening a file reads it again from your own copy.
Message Content
The formatted body of a message is cleaned before it is displayed and shown in an isolated frame where scripts cannot run, so a message cannot send information anywhere on its own.
Remote Images
Many emails contain pictures that are stored on the sender's servers. Loading them can tell the sender that, when and from which network address the message was opened. For this reason the extension blocks such images by default. If you press "Show images" for a message, or turn on "Always show remote images" in the settings, your browser downloads those pictures directly from the servers named in the email, exactly as a mail program would. The extension itself does not send anything to those servers, and we never receive this traffic.
Attachments, Printing and Downloads
When you preview an attachment, download it, save all attachments as a .zip archive, or print a message, the work is done locally by your browser. Files are offered to you as normal downloads. For printing, the message is passed to a new browser tab on your own computer. Nothing is ever sent to us or to any third party.
Data Stored on Your Device
To make the extension convenient to use, a small amount of information is kept in your browser's extension storage:
- Settings — your theme (system, light or dark) and whether remote images are always shown. These are kept with Chrome's sync storage, so if you have Chrome Sync turned on, Google may synchronize these two settings between your own browsers. No email content is ever stored there.
- Review prompt state — a simple counter of opened emails and whether you already answered the "rate this extension" prompt. This stays on your computer only.
The extension does not keep a history of the files you opened. All of this information is deleted when you uninstall the extension.
Information We Collect
What We Collect
Nothing. EML & MSG Viewer does not collect, transmit, or store any user data on any server. The only data the extension ever touches is the email file you choose to open, and that data stays on your own computer as described above.
What We Do Not Do
EML & MSG Viewer does not use analytics, does not track your browsing activity, does not read the websites you visit, does not require an account or sign-in, does not show ads, and does not collect your name, email address, or any other personal information.
Links to the Chrome Web Store
After you have used the extension a few times, it may show a small prompt inviting you to leave a review. If you choose 4 or 5 stars, your browser opens the extension's page on the Chrome Web Store in a new tab, exactly as clicking any link would. The Chrome Web Store is operated by Google and has its own privacy policy, which we do not control. If you choose 1 to 3 stars, a feedback page on our website opens instead (see below). No information about your files is included in either case.
Optional Feedback and Uninstall Feedback
When the extension is removed, or when you choose to leave feedback from the review prompt, Chrome opens a page on our website asking what went wrong. Answering is entirely optional. If you choose to send it, only the reason you selected, the comment you typed, your browser version and its language are delivered to our email through the Web3Forms form service. We do not ask for your name or email address, and the extension itself sends nothing. This feedback is used only to fix problems and improve the extension.
How We Use Your Information
Because your emails are read locally and never reach us, there is nothing for us to use. The extension only does, on your own device, what you asked it to: show your messages, preview and save attachments, and print.
When We Disclose Your Information
We do not collect or store your data on our own servers, so we have no data to disclose to third parties, service providers, or anyone else. We do not sell or transfer user data.
Your Choices and Data Subject Rights
You are always in full control of your data because it never leaves your device. You can close a file or the panel to clear the loaded message, keep remote images blocked, choose not to open a file, or uninstall the extension at any time. Individuals in the European Economic Area ("EEA") and other jurisdictions have certain legal rights regarding personal data; because EML & MSG Viewer holds none of your data on any server, those rights are already exercised directly by you on your own machine. If you have questions about this, you may email us at rentabextension@gmail.com.
Children
The Services are intended for users over the age of 18 and are not directed at children under the age of 13. Because we collect no personal information, we do not knowingly collect any from children. If you believe a child has somehow provided us information, contact us and we will address it.
Data Retention
We retain no user data, because we never receive any. Any email file you open stays on your own device under your own control for as long as you keep it there.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
We will continue to evaluate this Privacy Policy as we update the extension, and we may make changes accordingly. We will post any changes here and revise the date last updated above. We encourage you to check this page periodically to stay informed.
